Chapter 20

Around eleven that morning, Jacob called her attention to what was happening outside in the parking lot. A taxi stopped in front of the store. A young girl got out of it and slung her backpack over one arm. She thanked the driver and headed into the antique store while the driver sat two suitcases on the sidewalk just outside the door.

The child came inside and walked directly to the checkout counter where Becky stood. Then, she asked to speak to Mr. or Mrs. Patrick Burns. Since Becky had kept her maiden name after marrying Patrick, no one called her by her husband's name and the request was unusual.

Becky smiled while she estimated that the girl standing before her might be a couple of years older than Suzie Black. Suzie, a protégé and dear friend of Becky's, was gifted with the ability to see spirit guides.

"I'm Becky Tibbs, the owner of this store. What's your name?" Becky asked with her sweetest smile.

"I'm Cassidy Burns Clawson, Patrick Burn's daughter," the child replied without guile. However, Becky was still taken by surprise and her knees went weak.

Jacob heard the exchange, and from the way Becky wavered, he knew he could have knocked her over with a feather. A little shocked himself, Jacob rushed to his favorite medium's side to offer his assistance and whispered, "Oh my, did you know about this, Becky?" Becky shook her head in response as she clenched the checkout counter for support.

"If Patrick is your father, then who is your mother?" Becky managed to ask.

"My mother is Pricilla Clawson," Cassidy didn't hesitate, "but Patrick Burns is my biological father. It is here on my birth certificate if you'd like to see it." The child dug into her backpack and pulled out a document with an official raised seal on it. Becky took the paper and examined it.

Pricilla Ann Clawson was listed as the mother and Patrick Gustave Burns was named the father of Cassidy Burns Clawson born on January 15, 2010, in Spotsylvania County, Fredericksburg Virginia. Becky gulped again in surprise. She considered that this wasn't just a random claim from some woman from her husband's past. Pricilla had known Patrick well enough to know his unusual middle name. A middle name that very few people knew.

That birth date made Cassidy eleven years old and Patrick would have been about nineteen when she was conceived. Becky wondered why she hadn't heard of Pricilla Clawson before now, especially since Patrick had a love child with her.

"Do you want me to get Bobby or have him call Patrick?" Jacob worried. Becky shook her head once again.

"You arrived alone in a cab, Cassidy. Where is your mother right now?" Becky asked next.

"Mother had her best friend put me on a bus and she gave me enough money for food and cab fare. She told me to find my father and she gave me this address as the place to start looking for him."
